Review of National Sarcoma Surgical Services and the Scottish Sarcoma Network Progress Report

This is the second Highlight report setting out progress with the above Review since July 2009. The aim is to keep stakeholders fully informed about the independent review that is currently underway. It is planned that a further Progress Report will circulate in January 2010.

2. Data from the Service and the network

National Data presented to the Option Appraisal Group at their meeting on 24 August 2009.

The Group considered the data and the split between children and adult activity within the context of:

  • Scottish Government Health Directorate plans to move towards a Managed Service Network (MSN) model for children's cancer services.
  • National MDT way of working being established for
    • Children and young people with cancer
    • Bone and soft tissue sarcoma
  • The existing Managed Clinical Networks (MCN) for
    • Children and young people with cancer
    • Bone and soft tissue sarcoma
  • The data provided information on the volume of work at a national and regional level, split between children and adult services and also confirmed current treatment options.

3. Clinical Governance responsibilitiesSarcoma Paediatric Patient Care pathways presented to the Review Group on 24 August 2009.
4. National Sarcoma NetworkNational Managed Clinical Network stock-take and gap analysis against Health Department Letter (HDL) 2007 (21)) Strengthening the role of Managed Clinical Networks was presented to the Review Group on 24 August 2009.
5. Financial ExerciseReview Group Economist to now work with colleagues from NHS Grampian, Glasgow and Edinburgh to draw together and report the financial tracking exercise against the redefined national service.
6. ReportFirst draft report to be prepared for the Group to consider early in the New Year ready for submission to NSAG in early 2010.
