The first meeting of a Scottish Government initiated Review Group looking at the provision of molecular pathology in Scotland met on the 27th February. This is a short term working group which hopes to report in Summer 2009.
Aim: To give effect to the proposal originally set out in Delivering for Health[1] and subsequently reaffirmed as a specific commitment in Better Cancer Care[2], to carry out a strategic review of the organisation and development of molecular pathology services with a particular focus on the model of the Scottish Molecular Genetics Consortium.
Rationale: To deliver the Scottish Government's Better Health, Better Care Action (BHBC) and, in particular CEL 20 2008 which indicated that any relevant remaining aspects of Delivering for Health would be taken forward via BHBC work streams. This action therefore falls to the 18 Weeks RTT Programme Board, via its Diagnostic Steering Group (DSG), who reaffirmed that this commitment remained relevant for current and future service provision.
Papers and communication from this group will be publsihed on the SPAN website as and when they become available. The review initiation document and membership of the group is available here.
