Pathology in Scotland, 15 May 2008

The Scottish Pathology Network seminar took place in the Steel Rooms at Perth Royal Infirmary and was attended by approximately 50 delegates from a broad spectrum of representation including consultant pathologists, biomedical scientists and general management from most of the health board regions in Scotland. Most of the presentations from the day are available below.


Future Developments in Cancer in Scotland

Professor Frank Carey Chaired the 1st session in which Liz Porterfield gave an overview of Better Cancer Care linked with the objectives from Better Health Better Care.

Planning of Diagnostic Services in Scotland

This was followed by Colin Lauder who presented on the 18 week referral to treatment pathway. This highlighted the significant impact diagnostic have on the patients meeting the target.

Cervical Cytology - The Future

Derek Bishop chaired this session and it opened with Dr Jocelyn Imrie, who outlined how the review of cervical cytology laboratory services in Scotland may be impacted by new developments and technology.

Advanced Practice for Biomedical Scientists in Histopathology

Sarah May the Deputy Chief Executive of the Institute of Biomedical Science highlighted the advanced and extended roles for biomedical scientists within cellular pathology. She concluded with a short update on the impact of Modernising Scientific Careers.

Organisation of Histopathology Services: A Perspective from Warwickshire

Dr Scott Sanders and Dr Richard Carr gave an excellent talk on the developing modernisation strategy in England. It covered role extension for biomedical scientists and interesting perspectives on workload measurement for pathologists.

CJD - An Update

Professor James Ironside gave an interesting talk on the progress of CJD and its impact to healthcare and patients. He highlighted the origins of the disease and its link with beef consumption. He also highlighted the challenges in ensuring the future safety of the public and patients receiving transplanted organs and blood transfusions.

Molecular Pathology

Professor Barry Gusterson gave a very comprehensive reviw of the future for genetic diagnosis and predictive testing and its impact to treatment for breast cancer. He highlighted the increasing costs and commercial testing which will stimulate future test requesting patterns.


Scottish Pathology Network - What Next?

Finally Professor Frank Carey and Derek Bishop gave an overview of the progress of SPAN and its influence within Scottish Government. They also highlighted the future emerging networks in other disciplines.
