Cervical Cytology Laboratory Review

August 2009 Update

Options Appraisal

Since December's update the review process has continued with a number of meetings of both the review group and the reference group of stakeholders. The options for delivery of the cervical cytology laboratory service have been developed and the criteria for assessing the options completed. A long list of options from baseline through to centralisation/ consolidation have been generated with input from the reference and review groups. These have subsequently been reduced to a short list using the objectives and constraints. The short list has been subjected to stakeholder scoring of the non financial benefits at an event on the 29th May using the stakeholder developed benefit criteria. The next stages are to assess the options against the non financial risks. The presentation, including the options appraisal process, can be accessed here. The process and timelines are outlined in the diagram below:

Imaging Feasibility Study Update

The Imaging feasibility study was a study carried out following a request from the Cytology Review Group to assess the impact that imaging technology may have when used within a Scottish Cohort. See previous reports for an outline of the study.

All labs are fully functional with the technology and have had their review stations replaced with a new version in July 2009.

To date over 80000 samples have been screened through both the Imaged arm and the Manual arm of the study.

The results of the study are being evaluated and the study report to the review group is expected to be delivered in Autumn 2009.

The minutes of the feasibility group meetings in 2009 are below:
